Knee socks were a very popular fashion accessory in the seventies and were available in a vast assortment of colors and styles. Back then people would wear knee socks with almost any outfit, even shorts. But these fashion accessories have come a long way since the seventies, and while there are still those of us who will wear them with almost anything, including sandals, the current everyday look can be somewhat more stylish.

Many athletes wear socks that cover the leg as part of their sports uniform. Even small children who play soccer wear knee socks as an easy way to tuck away shin pads and keep their legs from getting kicked during a game or practice. Since they can be purchased in large volumes for relatively little money, almost everyone has a pair. Even though most people buy them in neutral colors, you can also find individual pairs in funky styles. Striped knee socks or socks in bright colors are a favorite among teenagers, who wear them with skirts or capris to add drama to their outfit in the form of outrageous leg wear. But the most common type of knee socks are those that are white, durable and come in bags of several pair.

You can find knee socks anywhere shoes are sold. Large chain stores sell their socks in the hosiery department and also have a special section in the store for boys and men’s sport socks. You can also purchase knee socks online if you have a special color or design you are looking for that may be too unique to find in a department or chain store. If you do a search you can even find knee socks with individual spaces for each toe. This may not sound practical to you but sometimes hosiery is more about style and less about practicality. Though you may wonder, as I did, how such a sock would fit inside a shoe without bunching uncomfortably.

The quality of knee socks can sometimes depend on the brand you buy. If you’re looking for socks to wear while playing sports, you will want to purchase ones that have a reinforced toe and durable elastic at the top to keep them from sagging. Eventually all socks wear out, but knee socks have the added drawback of the elastic stretching out at the top and losing their shape. If you shop for sales you can sometimes find great bargains on socks if you buy them in bulk.

Other stores sell items like socks and shoes at a discount because they are irregular and that is a great way to purchase specialty socks as well. In an item like a shirt, an irregularity would be very noticeable, but for a pair of knee socks, the slight irregularity would go unnoticed.
